The Brookdale Ladies enjoyed a wonderful Ascot Ladies Day at the Club recently. The event, which involved best frocks, fascinators (huh?... Ed.), live racing, bookies, spot prizes, gala dinner, canapes, champagne, morning suits, top hats and lots more was a tremendous success. It sold out and there is already a clamour and waiting list for next year's event.

The new Lady captain for 2011, Mrs. Kath Storey enjoyed wonderful weather for her Drive In on Tuesday 22nd March. The event which saw Kath kick off her year in style was supported by all the Lady Members and Kath was delighted with the turn out, the weather and the day in general. Kath also made a point of hoping that she hadn't taken all the early spring sunshine and that some would be left over for Mr Captain's Drive In on Saturday 26th March.
Vice Captain, Chris Gleave, took advantage of the fine weather and the gathering of all the lady members to capture the moment for posterity in the the picture you see with this news item.
Attached is a higher resolution PDF of the phtograph if you want to see it larger and in higher definition.
If you would like a high resolution JPEG copy of the photograph, just ask via the 'general enquiries' tab of the web site and I will be pleased to send one to you. The file you get would be ideal for printing on Photographic paper for you own record of this unique gathering.

Members, Visitors and especially the Club Administrators may have noticed the refurbish of the Club Office and Storage Rooms. All this work is now complete and Michelle, Treasurer and Secretary have a much nicer working environment and we even have space to store the old Club & Competition records!
A massive thanks are due to two people from Brookdale Golf Club here. A big hand and thank you for Messrs. Dave Harrison and John Stansfield.
John and Dave have spent an enormous amount of their own time and expense clearing, decorating and supplying and building cupboards in the office; clearing the stock room and mounting shelves for records.
Thanks again Dave and Stanner. It is very much appreciated.

The new Captain, Mr. Raymond Deacon, addressed the AGM, to kick his year in office off in style. Here is a summary of his speech:
“Mr Captain, Mr Vice Captain, Mr President, Past Captains, Lady Captain, Honorary members, Gentlemen.
I would like to start by offering my thanks to last years captain for his good nature, leadership, approachability and all round contribution to the clubs current position.
I would also offer a special thanks to those on the board for their support and contribution to the past year including those who started but did not finish the course!!!
A special thanks to Lewis and Paul for their contribution over the past 3 years
It was tough in places!
However a great many good decisions were taken during the course of many of the meetings that extended into the late hours of many evenings
I intend to continue with the good work started under this board and where possible push the boundaries to bring even more visible improvements for the club membership.
Such bold statements however require a certain amount of luck in trading and revenue levels. Plans can be blown off course by the weather and other factors as we can all see from the damage to the 16th ‘T’ from recent heavy rains.
The effect of the last quarter is still to be seen in the accounts and any further period of closure would substantially reduce our ambitions for the year.
We will focus heavily on Marketing and Promotions to increase clubs profile in the district and take advantage of the refurbished functions facility in which we have all invested.
Of course the club is a welcoming environment for the ladies section and juniors alike. The Incorporation of the ladies section under the equal rights legislation is an issue to be faced this year.
The board will need to take whatever decisions are necessary to accommodate this change and use this to encourage an increase in the ladies membership through promotions activities.
We will continue to promote, encourage and support the junior section as these are the new blood of the club. They should not be seen as an irritant or an inconvenience when on the course unless of course they are misbehaving.
My charity this year will be “The North Manchester Bury and Oldham” Lymphoma support group. My wife Donna and many others have benefited a great deal from the support group as patients in remission or undertaking treatment for Lymphoma.
The groups offer great support for patients, family and carers meeting every few weeks and was established around 12 month sago for this purpose. Some of the donations made will also be contributed to the Lymphoma Association.
In support of this charity on those occasions when fundraising is taking place I will wear purple and would encourage you to do the same by joining me by wearing whatever article you wish to wear in that colour.
I will be taking every opportunity to extract multiple contributions from you all for this good cause. That includes the use of the oldest member at the club “Mr Tree” on the first. This will be my nominated collection point, fail to pass or hit he tree and I hope I can lean on your honesty to put £1 in the captains charity box.
I would like to send my best wishes to Albert Brogan who has provided great service to the club for many years and who through illness is unavailable to attend tonight. I send my best wishes for his speedy recovery.
I intend to enjoy my year as captain and wish you an enjoyable year also.
Thank You”

The President of Brookdale for 2011 is Mr. Mark Leigh. Mark remains in post for a second year and was re-inaugurated at the recent AGM, where he had the following words to say, when he addressed the meeting:
"Firstly I want to thank the outgoing Captain for his efforts over the past year, I think you will all agree what a tremendous success and credit to the club he has been. It has been a pleasure and honour to serve alongside you Mr. Captain and Mr. Vice Captain; you have a lot to live up to.
Thank you also Mr. Vice Captain for nominating me as President for your coming office; I wish you every success in what I expect to be a rewarding and successful year for you, your family and the club
Thank you also to the Board of Directors for supporting my nomination and having the confidence in me to serve as your President for another year
Last, and by no means least, a sincere vote of thanks to you Members, for approving my appointment. Thank you.
Last year I stood before you and said that I believed those new appointments gave us a very strong group and that I fully expected them to lead the Club with enthusiasm, wisdom, prudence and innovation. A year on, I believe that has proven to be the case.
A small an indication of the progress this board has made; is that last year the recurring comment to me, were enquiries as to when the Club is going to collapse. This year, the most frequent complaint I have heard is that there were not enough pies on Bonfire Night. I think that is as strong an indication of approval as could we could expect.
As President I will continue to provide as much support and assistance as I can to the Captain, the board and members, as well as to represent the Club to the best of my abilities wherever needed.
Thank you again. I wish you all an enjoyable and successful golfing year and for Brookdale to continue with the progress made in the past year."

The new Lady Captain, Mrs. Kath Storey has now been installed in office for 2011. Here is an extract of Kath's inaugural speech:
“Honorary Ladies, Past Lady Captains, Ladies, Good Evening
Firstly, may I add my congratulations to Sue for her year as Lady Captain, she certainly seemed to enjoy her year in office. Thank you Sue.
When I joined Brookdale in 1998 I never thought I would one day be in this position I am honoured and probably slightly apprehensive to accept the role of Lady Captain 2011, but I can assure you I will do my utmost to represent the Brookdale Golf Club and most importantly the Ladies of Brookdale to the best of my ability throughout the coming year.
This year I am planning to have a joint Competition & Social committee and I would like to thank all the ladies who will be supporting me, and playing vital roles in the running of the comps & team events .
My Drive in is on 22nd March so I hope as many of you as you can will play, any non players are invited to join us for afternoon tea after the comp.
We haven’t decided on any social events to date but when we do I will put a notice on the the notice board in the locker room. One social occasion I would like to resurrect is the Tuesday afternoon Whist this summer, I miss it as I am sure, do some of you.
As we all know there are changes afoot as regards to the new Equality laws. At this moment we are not sure what implications there will be in respect of our status as Lady Members, hopefully as soon as things become a little clearer the Board of Directors will inform us.
Another change that needs to be considered is the matter of the Ladies funds . Apparently these need to be transferred to the club so we are effectively ‘all under the same roof’.
At the moment no one has discussed the details with me in my role of treasurer, but I will be broaching the subject as soon as I am able to with the Board, as I feel there are conditions we need to set in place. We can discuss this further in A.O.B if anyone wishes to do so.
Finally I am looking forward to representing you this year and hope I can rely on your continued support and friendship throughout my year as Lady Captain.
THANK YOU”
