BROOKDALE NEWS 

 Congratulation go to our 3 Major Teams, A; B; and Rabbits, The A and B Teams are this years Oldham and District League Winners, The B Team taking the title with a dramatic 8-0  away win at Oldham G.C. on the last day of the session, The Rabbits are this years Oldham and District league Cup Winners taking the title for a record third year in a row by beating Stamford G.C. at Houldsworth G.C. 5 - 3 in the Cup Final , The Team Captains, John Uren (A) Chris Gleave (B) Neil Mills (R) would like to thank Brookdale Golf Club and all Team Members for there fantastic support throughout the session.       

The A.G.M.(11th February 2008) Mr Gary Coop was voted in by members has the new Honorary Treasurer, taking over from Mr Peter Sinclair, A new Honorary Club Secretary was also voted in, Mr Tom Conley (a past Captain of Brookdale) will take over from Derek Miller, who now takes a seat on the Board along side new Board Members, Mr Chris Gleave, Mr Philip Brownlow and Mr Ray Deacon.  Also approved by the members this years; Captain Mr Paul Cain, Vice Captain Mr Lewis Marland and President Mr Jim Garside.

A new membership category as been approved by the Board of Directors. From the 9th April 08 "Associate Membership" will be made available at a cost of £175, for terms and conditions please contact the admin office.

2008 "BROOKDALE FESTIVAL OF GOLF". We have started planning for this years events and are looking for Sponsors, (holes, spot prizes and even the Hole Event) anyone interested or know someone who may be please inform "Mark Leigh" at Brookdale.

Start sheets are now available for the Brookdale Festival of Golf, Sunday 10th August-Sunday 17th August, you can book in the pro shop or visitors can request an application form from; brookdalegolf@btconnect.com

The cost of room hire as increased from £60 to £100, (free to members) the refundable deposit stays the same at £250.

Our new assistant professional is Scott Dargen, Scott joins us from Pike Fold Golf Club.

Thank you to all who took the time to put your suggestions forward for the naming of the holes on the course, the sheet is now closed and the committee as decided on the following names;

1st Ashbridge (s.i.15) The site of the former "Ashbridge Farm"     

2nd Poplars (s.i.1) Named in recognition of the large Manchester poplar trees alongside the right of the fairway and guarding the way into the green.

3rd Jack's Holme (s.i.13)  The home of our former Captain, the architect and inspiration for the expansion of the course to 18 holes, Mr Holmes had his home adjacent to the 3rd green and 4th tee.

4th Atherton (s.i.11) Recognition of Michael Atherton, Captain and opening batsman for England and Lancashire. Former resident of Woodhouse Village and member of the adjacent Cricket Club.

5th Moat (s.i.9) The stretch of water guarding the front of the green and hidden from view.

6th Waterhouses (s.i.5)  The nearby hamlet was originally called Waterhouses, but local 19th century writer and poet Ben Brierley called it Daisy Nook in a popular book "A Day Out" and the name caught on.

7th The Old Barn (s.i.17) One gable end of a large Dutch Barn dominates the western end of the course by the 7th green.

8th Medlock Vale (s.i.7)  Named after the neighbouring farm, river and valley though which the remainder of the course traverses.

9th Probert`s Hollow (s.i.3)  The 9th hole covers the area of the valley historically known as "Proberts Hollow"

10th The Sycamore (s.i.8) The fairway is dominated by a single mature Sycamore tree. Play round or over but rarely thought it.

11th Plateau (s.i.12) Both tee and green are built on plateau's either side of the valley.

12th Course View (s.i.6) A panoramic view of the course can be seen and admired from this vantage point.

13th Canal (s.i.2) The Hollinworth Branch of the Ashton Canal runs from Fairfield in Droylsden through Littlemoss alongside the 13th hole on to Daisy Nook Country Park.

14th Daisy Nook (s.i.18) The local Country Park and Beauty spot, described by local poet Ben Brieley, just beyond the 14th green.

15th Shaky Bridge (s.i.4) Many years ago there was a narrow bridge across the River Medlock just near what is now the 15th green. It was thought to be less than sturdy and was known as the "Shaky Bridge".

16th Badger's Wood (s.i.16)  The woods next to the 16th green are home to several families of badgers.

17th River's Bend (s.i.10)  The River Medlock travels in front of the 17th tee, bending in an arc in front of the green.

18th Last Gasp (s.i.14)  Anyone who has played Brookdale golf course will know why. If you haven't played, come and find out!
